CPA CPE: Free and Low-Cost Ways to Meet Your Requirements
The requirement is real, the cost is negotiable
CPAs must complete continuing professional education to keep their license, and the hours and subject mix depend on your state board. What is not fixed is the price you pay. Legitimate free and low-cost CPE exists if you know where to look.
Professional memberships pay for themselves
The AICPA & CIMA, state CPA societies, and groups like the IMA include free or heavily discounted CPE in membership. A single included webinar series can cover a meaningful chunk of your annual requirement, often making the membership cheaper than buying the same hours a la carte.
Free does not mean low quality
Many free CPE sessions are technical and current — tax and accounting updates, ethics, and technology trends — because providers use them to build relationships, not to teach fluff. The key is the provider's accreditation: confirm the session is eligible for CPE in your state before you count it.
Understand the ethics and subject mix
Most state boards require a specific number of ethics hours and a mix of technical subjects, and some limit self-study. Read your state board's current rules first. A pile of free technical webinars will not help if you are missing the mandated ethics component.
Track the details your board wants
For each session, record the provider, the title, the date, the number of credits, and the subject area. State boards differ on ethics requirements and self-study limits, so keep a format that lets you prove compliance without reconstructing the year.
Plan, then backfill
Sketch your requirement at the start of your cycle, take the free and included options first, and reserve paid courses for the specialized or required subjects you cannot get otherwise. That order reliably lowers the total cost.
If you sell accounting education
CPAs actively search for low-cost, accredited CPE. If you teach, lead your listing with the credit type, the accrediting body, the number of credits, and the state-board acceptance status — those are the search terms that bring accountants to your door.
