HR Recertification on a Deadline: Webinars That Earn SHRM and HRCI Credits
Know your numbers
Both SHRM and HRCI run on recertification cycles with a required number of credits (SHRM PDCs and HRCI credits respectively) over a multi-year window. Before you book anything, log in and confirm exactly how many credits you still need and when your cycle ends. Guessing here is the most common avoidable mistake.
Pre-approved is the fast path
Pre-approved providers speed things up, but the credit is not automatic. SHRM approves organizations as Recertification Providers that award PDCs for their own activities; HRCI similarly recognizes approved providers. You still must attend or complete the activity, confirm it fits an eligible recertification category, and then report it — HRCI asks you to enter the completed activity's ID in your account, and both bodies can audit a recertification application and ask you to document your hours.
Webinars beat self-study for speed
When you are short on time, a one-hour live or on-demand webinar is usually the fastest legitimate credit, because the credit maps directly to the session length. Clusters of short webinars on compliance, benefits, and employment law tend to be the most reliable source of pre-approved hours.
Watch the recertification window rules
Both bodies have rules about what counts and when. SHRM recertification allows a mix of PDCs across categories, and HRCI has its own breakdown of acceptable activities. Credits often must be earned within your cycle, so a webinar from before your current window may not carry over. Confirm before you book.
Track as you go
Keep a folder with the certificate, the date, the provider, and the program ID for every session. SHRM and HRCI both audit a sample of recertification applications, and a clean record is the difference between a smooth renewal and a stressful one.
Do not overpay
Membership webinars are frequently free for members and often inexpensive otherwise. Before paying a premium for a course, check whether the same credit is available through your association's included webinar library.
If you are an HR trainer or vendor
The same audience that needs recertification credits is actively searching for pre-approved sessions. If you offer HR education, a clearly labeled, pre-approved webinar with the credit type stated up front is exactly what these searchers want to find.
